Discovery Starts with CHOP’s Dr. Caroline Diorio

Toronto native Caroline Diorio, MD, FRCPC, FAAP, was inspired to move from Canada to Philadelphia after one of her patients did to receive cell therapy treatment.

Women Lead Life Sciences Job Growth in Region

As the number of life sciences jobs in the Greater Philadelphia region grows, an increasing number of those jobs are being held by women, according to data the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia analyzed from Lightcast, a global labor market data and analytics company. Over the past decade, Philadelphia has seen a 12% increase in women working in life sciences occupations compared  to 8.6% growth for men (Lightcast’s Historical Demographics by Occupation, 2023), including growth in cell and gene therapy roles. The uptick is reflected across professions, including biochemists and biophysicists, medical scientists, biological scientists, and biological technicians.

Jobs and internships in the rapidly growing life sciences and tech industries are the focus of a virtual career fair and networking event produced by Campus Philly, with the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia as the presenting partner. The Life Sciences & Tech career event, to be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, is an opportunity for area companies to connect with diverse students and recent grads to further build the region’s talent pipeline.

Study Updates Projections For Region’s Future Cell & Gene Therapy Talent Needs

Two years after releasing the results of an independent study analyzing the workforce landscape and future talent needs of the Greater Philadelphia region’s cell & gene therapy sector, the Chamber’s CEO Council for Growth and the University City Science Center are releasing a new and updated report. 

Economic consulting firm Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI) was reengaged to refresh and update the “Cell and Gene Therapy and Connected Health Workforce Analysis” completed in 2019-2020 to reflect changes in the industry. The result is a current and detailed workforce demand and supply study for Greater Philadelphia’s cell & gene therapy hub.
