Utilizing research from PitchBook, the report covers VC investments by industry and includes the pharma and biotech sectors in addition to other industries.

US Department of Transportation announces PhilaPort to receive $25.5 million

In a letter to congressional leaders, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced that PhilaPort, the Port of Philadelphia, is expected to receive $25.5 million to complete the second phase of a multi-phase improvement plan at the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.   The project supports the economic strengths of the region’s ports and maritime industry through enhancements that will increase operating capacity and generate economic benefits. Last week, Congress returned to Washington, D.C., to begin work on a laundry list of legislative items, including extending the Children’s Health Insurance Program, reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration, reforming our tax code and fixing the immigration system.

In September, Congress is in session only 12 days, so while we recognize there is a lot to do in a short amount of time, we’d like to add one more item to Congress’ to-do list this fall: the passage of a transformative transportation infrastructure spending package.

In his role as senior VP and managing director of Safeguard Scientifics, a venture capital firm based just outside Philadelphia, Gary Kurtzman leads the firm’s healthcare investments. So he’s perhaps a bit biased when he says that Philadelphia is the “center of the healthcare universe,” as he did in a 2016 interview.
