Women Lead Life Sciences Job Growth in Region

As the number of life sciences jobs in the Greater Philadelphia region grows, an increasing number of those jobs are being held by women, according to data the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia analyzed from Lightcast, a global labor market data and analytics company. Over the past decade, Philadelphia has seen a 12% increase in women working in life sciences occupations compared  to 8.6% growth for men (Lightcast’s Historical Demographics by Occupation, 2023), including growth in cell and gene therapy roles. The uptick is reflected across professions, including biochemists and biophysicists, medical scientists, biological scientists, and biological technicians.

ChristianaCare Spins Out CorriXR Therapeutics

On October 11, 2022, Wilmington, Delaware-based ChristianaCare announced it had spun out its first commercial biotechnology private startup company, CorriXR Therapeutics. The startup will use CRISPR gene editing technology to develop new, clinically relevant oncologic therapeutics in areas of unmet medical need, starting with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.

CorriXR Therapeutics’ close relationship with ChristianaCare and the ChristianaCare Gene Editing Institute uniquely positions the new company to research and develop innovative, patient-centered therapies, the nonprofit health system said in its release. Comparative Study Ranks Philadelphia Region #2 Among 14 Cell and Gene Therapy Hubs

In a newly released study comparing 14 U.S. cell and gene therapy hubs in five key categories, the Philadelphia region ranks #2 among U.S. locations. Commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia and researched by economic consulting firm Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI), the study compares cell and gene therapy hubs in research infrastructure, human capital, innovation output, commercial activity, and value proposition. The only region ranked higher overall than Philadelphia was Boston. New York and San Francisco were ranked #3 and #4, respectively.

An initiative launched more than three years ago to boost awareness of the region as a hub for cell and gene therapy is getting ready to unveil its latest effort to promote the fast-growing sector.
