Comparative Study Ranks Philadelphia Region #2 Among 14 Cell and Gene Therapy Hubs

In a newly released study comparing 14 U.S. cell and gene therapy hubs in five key categories, the Philadelphia region ranks #2 among U.S. locations. Commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia and researched by economic consulting firm Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI), the study compares cell and gene therapy hubs in research infrastructure, human capital, innovation output, commercial activity, and value proposition. The only region ranked higher overall than Philadelphia was Boston. New York and San Francisco were ranked #3 and #4, respectively.

The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia’s “Discovery Starts with Me” series was created to support the attraction, retention, and development of life sciences talent within Greater Philadelphia. Animation Illustrates Region’s Connected CGT Startup Ecosystem

Greater Philadelphia has a new tool to tell the story of collaboration and connectivity in the region’s hub for cell and gene therapy. Titled Greater Philadelphia: Discovery Starts Here,” the 90-second video animation shares a snapshot of several of the region’s world-class research institutions and a number of the cell and gene therapy companies that have licensed technologies or spun out from them. Discovery Starts with Iovance Biotherapeutics’ Margot Wilson

Iovance Biotherapeutics’ Cell Therapy Center (iCTC) in Greater Philadelphia is the first centralized and scalable manufacturing facility dedicated to producing tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) as a potential therapy for patients with solid tumor cancers. One of the leaders on the ground at Iovance’s manufacturing facility is Margot Wilson, Director of Operational Excellence. Wilson works to ensure that these TIL cells are properly manufactured to be returned and administered as potential cancer treatments to patients. Wilson’s goal in working at Iovance? AmerisourceBergen, a global healthcare services company headquartered in Greater Philadelphia, announced it has formally established a cell and gene therapy service line as part of its commitment to support cell and gene therapy innovators. This new service line will be led by Lung-I Cheng, Ph.D., who recently joined AmerisourceBergen as Vice President of Cell and Gene Therapy.

Study Updates Projections For Region’s Future Cell & Gene Therapy Talent Needs

Two years after releasing the results of an independent study analyzing the workforce landscape and future talent needs of the Greater Philadelphia region’s cell & gene therapy sector, the Chamber’s CEO Council for Growth and the University City Science Center are releasing a new and updated report. 

Economic consulting firm Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI) was reengaged to refresh and update the “Cell and Gene Therapy and Connected Health Workforce Analysis” completed in 2019-2020 to reflect changes in the industry. The result is a current and detailed workforce demand and supply study for Greater Philadelphia’s cell & gene therapy hub.
