Greater Philadelphia’s life sciences ecosystem was recognized with the #5 spot in JLL’s 2022 Life Sciences Research Outlook & Cluster Rankings. The new ranking reflects a rise from the #9 spot in 2021. JLL evaluated geographic clusters on talent (35% weight), funding (30% weight), and commercial real estate (35% weight). Among the highlights was JLL’s recognition of Philadelphia as “home to a deep and growing pool of talent coming from the region’s strong universities.” The report also recognized Philadelphia as a leader in the cell and gene therapy sector.

“We are thrilled to see Philadelphia grow from a Top 10 to a Top 5 ranking in JLL’s life sciences report,” said Claire Marazzo Greenwood, Executive Director and Senior Vice President of Economic Competitiveness, the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia. “JLL’s recognition of our region’s talent pool as a significant contributor to Philadelphia’s placement is especially meaningful. Through our region’s multi-year Cell and Gene Therapy Initiative, Life Sciences Talent Collaborative, innovative and collaborative Biomedical Technician Training Program, and talent ambassador promotional campaign, we have been working hard to elevate awareness of and provide support for the future growth of our region’s talent pool. The ranking is further evidence of the momentum we are experiencing in our life sciences sector and opportunities for talent in our region.”

In addition to the list of rankings, JLL created a new Life Sciences Cluster Composition Matrix to provide a view of each cluster’s human capital and physical capital characteristics, noting that these attributes capture the essence of what makes a life sciences market successful. In this new view, JLL recognized Philadelphia as among the best in a group it identified as above average.
