CEO Council staff joined representatives of the “Business for Federal Research Funding” coalition and participated in a daylong trip to Washington, D.C. this week to build support for strong research funding growth in the federal budget.
The coalition delegation met with key players in the congressional budget process. The coalition argued that in order to provide for the development and advancement of a strong innovation economy, and to remain global leaders in research, it is essential to increase federal accounts responsible for dispersing research funds at a steady rate above inflation each year beginning with the fiscal year (FY) 2015 appropriations process.
The federal government plays a major role in funding research efforts leading to major breakthroughs in innovation, new technologies, life-saving medical treatments, and jobs for millions of Americans. The coalition will continue to mobilize support among House and Senate members in the weeks and months ahead to secure sustained research funding growth across several areas of the federal budget, including those related to the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, NASA, and the Departments of Agriculture, Defense, Energy, and Homeland Security.
